The Z Inventories of Primary Production or ZIPP Project studies the net community production (NCP) in the ocean’s euphotic zone via in situ mass spectrometry. Part of the project includes a collaboration with North Kingstown High School by having their students participate in a “Hypoxia Lab” experiment. The lab is designed to show how basic physics, chemistry and biology concepts are used in oceanography to study the effects of anoxia in coastal areas.
The Geotracerkitchen did a mock experiment that focused on the biology aspect of the “Hypoxia Lab”. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations were measured to demonstrate photosynthesis and respiration in the green macro algae , Ulva lactuca.
The Arduino UNO microcontroller and software were used to acquire the DO concentrations.
